Hand-crafted furniture from the Railwoods Collection is typically available in four wood types and four wood finishes or characters. The woods from which the furniture is fashioned are processed from old railroad ties known as sleepers. The sleepers are excavated from the now abandoned African railroad. Many have been in the ground for more than a century.

This unique aging phenomenon imparts distinctive character to the wood's surface, texture and grain. The varied textures of the woods are defined in four categories, from smooth and elegant to rustic.
